Reasons for crooked teeth

A crooked or crowded tooth can have many causes and each patient has his or her own particularities regarding the degree of this condition.

In general, the main reasons why teeth are crooked are the following :

  • hereditary– Dental crowding can occur because of the malposition of your teeth defined by genetic factors. After all, heredity can determine characteristics such as mouth space, tooth size, jaw bone proportion and even facial deformities ;
  • acquired habits – Even if your genetics favor aligned teeth, certain habits can contribute to tooth misalignment, such as thumb sucking, biting objects, nail biting, constantly pressing the tongue against the teeth, and prolonged use of pacifiers in babies ;
  • trauma– Although less common, it is possible to misalign teeth due to trauma, injury or blows to the teeth.

TREATMENTS FOR DENTAL CROWDING
Orthodontics is the specialty that treats the problem of misaligned teeth. The treatment chosen by the dentist will take into account several specific factors to the patient, such as age, aesthetic goals and the degree of crowding of the teeth. As a result, the length of orthodontic treatment and even the type of appliance will vary depending on each individual’s particular needs. The main forms of correction for crowded teeth are braces. Furthermore, to correct dental arch and alignment problems, braces can also mark the end result of the smile more harmonious with the proportions of the face.

ORTHODONTIC APPLIANCES CAN BE DIVIDED INTO TWO CATEGORIES:

  • Fixed devices

Fixed appliances composed of metal or ceramic brackets, which may or may not be connected by a wire. The correction is made by the mechanical force applied to align the misaligned tooth. Currently, there are very discreet models that can be made with different materials, such as porcelain, which can offer greater aesthetic comfort to the patient. Fixed modality that cannot be removed there is also the lingual option, in which the brackets are located inside the teeth, and are therefore hidden from those who observe the patient’s smile.

  • Mobile devices

They are more recommended for children due to their effectiveness in treating problems in the early stages of life. They can be used after treatment with fixed appliances to maintain the alignment obtained.
