Dental malocclusion

Rhone Dental Clinic Article Malocclusion Dentaire Image01

Although an orthodontist can improve a smile at any age, there is an optimal time to begin treatment. At Rhône Dental Clinic we recommend that the first orthodontic evaluation take place as early as age 3. At this early age, orthodontic treatment may not be mandatory, but a careful examination can help anticipate the best time to begin orthodontic treatment!

Why do we need to treat malocclusions?

Early assessment allows for both, an early detection of problems and a better effective treatment. A careful intervention guides growth and development, preventing serious problems later on. Orthodontic intervention is not necessary, an orthodontist can carefully monitor growth and development and to begin treatment at the ideal time.

The ideal would be to do it in relation with a pediatrician for a very simple reason : to increase the harmonious growth of the upper jaw which guides the growth of the lower jaw. This harmonious growth will influence the way the child will breathe, so you will not have a child who will breathe through the mouth having a sleep that will not be recuperative. For example, children who are surrounded at school and who do not recuperate well, therefore who are not concentrated at school and who have school failures often come from a difficult sleep in relation to a difficult occlusion.

According to Swiss studies, untreated malocclusions can lead to various problems:

  • Crowded teeth are more difficult to brush and floss properly, which can contribute to tooth decay and/or gum disease.
  • Protruding teeth are more likely to fracture accidentally.
  • Cross-bites can lead to unfavorable growth and uneven wear of teeth.
  • Open bites can lead to tongue thrusting habits and speech problems.

Orthodontics doesn’t just give you a pretty smile, it gives you a better health too.
It is important to know that all children are different. After a personalized consultation, our team will be able to present you with the best possible treatment for your children! We will take the time to answer all your questions!

The benefits of interceptive treatment

Some of the most direct results of interceptive (early) treatment are:

  1. Create space for erupting and crowded teeth.
  2. Create facial symmetry by influencing jaw growth
  3. Reduce the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
  4. Preserve space for unerupted teeth
  5. Reduce the need to remove teeth
  6. Reduce treatment time with braces

Orthodontic treatment late in life can significantly improve your personal appearance and self-esteem. It is equally important to improve the health of your teeth and gums. Crooked teeth and a poor bite can contribute to gum and bone loss, tooth decay, abnormal wear of enamel and tooth surfaces, headaches and jaw joint pain.
During the initial examination, we will be able to determine the best possible treatment for your children’s orthodontic needs in Geneva.
Moreover, we can define the treatment plan, the expected duration of treatment and the approximate cost.

Children talk about braces! They ask a lot of questions about the treatment with their imaginations. I will take the necessary time in a playful way in order to reassure them !
