Dental whitening in Geneva

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth Whitening is the practice of aesthetic dentistry designed to lighten the shade of your teeth dramatically.

Our society gives an ever more considerable importance to the search for perfect form, well-being, beauty and eternal youth. A brilliant smile not only demonstrates a positive state of health and ideal hygiene, but it also plays a preponderant role of social integration and recognition.

Colouration of the teeth may result from extrinsic marks (located on the surface of the teeth, that is to say on the enamel) and/or intrinsic (situated between the prisms of the enamel and more deeply anchored in the dentine, that is to say the layer under the enamel).

The products on the market (whitening toothpaste and mouthwashes) can clean some extrinsic marks. But only a professional whitening agent can remove all extrinsic marks and achieve intrinsic colourations.

All you need to know about teeth whitening

How do teeth become so white?

Although the effectiveness of teeth whitening is well recognised, the mechanism of this method is less well known…

The two main ingredients used for teeth whitening are carbamide peroxide (composed of urea and hydrogen peroxide) and hydrogen peroxide (created with hydrogen and oxygen)

Carbamide peroxide is effective for removing stains on tooth enamel. It is safe as long as its concentration is no higher than 44% in a formula.

Hydrogen peroxide is a natural bleaching agent secreted by the human body. It does not represent a significant danger, provided it is prescribed and applied in moderation.

Dental whitening: legislation and common beliefs

Smile bars disappearing

Most major cities have specialised whitening shops, known as “smile bars”, opened in the recent years. Claiming that teeth whitening is an aesthetic and not a medical act, these merchants have sought to facilitate access to this type of treatment, previously reserved for a privileged clientele.

Medical corporatism, however, has been against this practice, insisting on the danger of allowing unqualified staff to provide care in a non-professional environment.

Without the possibility of making customised gutters to apply the products or to efficiently protect the gums, with the risk of introducing over-concentrated or uncontrolled solutions into the mouth, these businesses quickly lost their appeal, unable to guarantee expected safely.

With smile bars tending to disappear and a negative image of this concept as countless miracle products are sold especially on the Internet, there are many doubts and reluctance with regard to this method which is nevertheless effective when it is practised by medical professionals.

Customized teeth whitening protocols for an optimal aesthetic result

Rhône Dental Clinic offers various exclusive medical protocols, adapted specifically to age, original color of the teeth and expectations of the patient, to guarantee a satisfactory and fast aesthetic result, and limiting the side effects. During each treatment, initial shade of the teeth is evaluated and photographed so that the patient can judge the difference, using a color chart.

Protocole Erosion Care Protocol

The “erosion generation” protocol developed for our patients concerns people who are 20 to 40 years old and who suffer from increased tooth sensitivity. For these patients, who are affected by thermal stimuli, the acidity of citrus or energy drinks, sugar or excessive brushing, our protocol provides for desensitisation and a different concentration of products.

For these patients, attacked by thermal stimuli, the acidity of citrus or energy drinks, sugar or excessive brushing, our protocol provides for desensitization and a different concentration of products.

1st step:

Equipped with custom-made gutters (made in our laboratory – link to page “Ceramics technicians”), our patients benefit from a first phase of care intended to close the tubulis (gateway to sensitivities) with a special fluoride or even, in some cases, the application of a dentine sealant and/or laser treatment.

This first part of treatment allows the patients suffering from tooth hypersensitivity to have access to dental whitening without suffering any adverse effects.

The dentist establishes a personalized treatment plan, according to your expectations and your pace of life:

  • Treatment "at the chair", for an immediate result in 1 or 2 session (s).
  • Home whitening, for a progressive result in 7 to 10 days.

    2nd step:
After elimination of sensitivities, the dentist recommends the most appropriate method of whitening: “Jump Start” – express treatment in chair, duration: 1h30 Our express Jump Start treatment triggers an acceleration protocol for whitening molecules. After scrupulously protecting the gums, the practitioner paints a (carbamide peroxide and/or hydrogen peroxide based) whitening gel on the teeth. An LED activation lamp penetrates the gel through the enamel to touch the molecules responsible for the colouring. The smile then becomes immediately whiter and brighter. Although the whitening effect is instantly visible, the patient can still accentuate it by extending home treatment. The concentration of the product (gel applied in the gutter) and the duration of the treatment remain defined by the dentist This method is performed with custom-made gutters and a product concentration and duration defined by the dentist.
